About Corey Ruffin
Co-Founder & Leader, Super Happy Funtime Burlesque
Corey is a musician, composer, performer, and official narcissist. He is a circular breathing, mouth singing, polymath performer with 15 years of professional experience playing the saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, drums, and piano during his residencies in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Grand Rapids not to mention several national tours. For three years he worked as a caricaturist and illustrator under Tom Richmond of Mad Magazine fame and he also self-publishes and distributes his own his mini-comics. He currently teaches saxophone, flute, clarinet, and guitar to people of all ages. He lives on the Divsion Avenue of the Arts with his sexy and amazing girlfriend Rachel Finan aka Rachelbutoh aka La La Vulvaria. The Super Happy Funtime Burlesque was founded in 2006 by Corey Ruffin, Rachel Finan, Rich Haralson, and Josh Dunigan – to launch a revival of the theatrical entertainment style in Grand Rapids. Yes, churchy, small town Grand Rapids is home to one of the only regular burlesque and vaudeville shows in Michigan. Super Happy Funtime Burlesque is a 12 member touring monstrosity. A live band, a burlesque troupe, a circus act, that is all together too contemporary, too modern, too bawdy, and too controversial to be defined just as “burlesque”. So, calling itself “burlesque” for lack of a better term, SHFB is just returning from their 8th national tour. Corey Ruffin is the bandleader of the house band “The End Times Orchestra,” who hosts the show as the dentally challenged “Mr. Happy Pants”. Super Happy Funtime has been performing in Grand Rapids since 2006, and originally hosted monthly Sunday night show at the Sazerac Lounge. Neglected by the major media, they got support from Recoil and Revue magazines. Eventually, the Sazerac shows began selling out with 175 people squeezing into the bar even as ticket prices rose to reflect all the work that went into each performance, and they had to seek a new venue to accommodate their growing audience. With a successful performance record at the Sazerac the managers of Super Happy Funtime persuaded the Wealthy Theatre to let the burlesque show take the stage. The SHFTB troupe now performs for over 300 people at their regular shows at Wealthy Theatre and regularly tours the country with originally composed musical selections by Corey Ruffin and original performances by the cast.
