CFI—MI welcomes Steve Sampson to discuss his evolution from the idealism and ‘cover’ of the Catholic Church to a Buddhist practitioner and a compassionate atheist, as well as the discovery of compassion and wisdom through the practice of meditation.

About Ahm Don Steve Sampson
Ahm Don Steve Sampson was born in Fremont, Michigan and lived on a farm in Oceana County. He took vows with the Missionary Brothers of Charity in Los Angeles in 1981. He worked as a Brother in Los Angeles and Santa Ana in Southern California, Tijuana in Mexico, Houston, and Philadelphia. In the 1990s he managed Butterball Farms. In 1996, his partner died of HIV-AIDS. The following year Steve was diagnosed with the same condition. During his time in the hospital he began the study and practice of Theravada Buddhism. He also came to the sanity of Atheism. He took his Precepts in the Vietnamese Zen tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh at the Vietnamese Buddhist Temple in Lansing in April of 2007. In April of 2012 he took Precepts in the Korean Taego Zen tradition. He is now studying to become a Dharma teacher within the Taego Order. Steve is also a writer with two published novels. He’s working on the third novel. He’s a member of the Grand Rapids’ Zen Buddhist Temple and the Withered Tree Meditation Community in Eastown.
