Sunday, August 9, 2020
Online Meeting – Link in Event Details
Frank Crownover or Jessica Wolin
Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day’s topic followed by open discussion. At 12:00pm we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.
This week’s topic is: White Male Dominance in the Skeptical Movement. Is the skeptical movement dominated by white males? If so, why might that be, and how could that disparity be addressed or remedied? We plan to examine the following articles that address this issue and discuss participants’ personal experiences and thoughts.
Why Are There So Few Women Skeptics? by Professor DeeAnne Wymer at the Philadelphia Association for Critical Thinking
A Woman’s Place? The Dearth of Women in the Secular Movement by Susan Jacoby (or watch the video of the original lecture at the 2012 CFI Women in Secularism conference).
The World’s Newest Major Religion: No Religion by Gabe Bullard at National Geographic
Members are welcome to propose and schedule a topic which would be of interest toward establishing a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. Please contact us if you have a topic that you would like to discuss at an upcoming Café Inquiry.
Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
