Virtual Meeting – Link in Event Details
Frank Crownover or Jessica Wolin
Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day’s topic followed by open discussion. At 12:00pm we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.
This week’s topic is: A Look at Complimentary Medicine. We will discuss complementary medicine, exploring how to evaluate the evidence for or against its effectiveness. This will also involve a discussion of the placebo effect. Some of us may see a parallel between questioning our religious beliefs and questioning our medical beliefs. Following are links to articles with information about two former complementary medicine practitioners as well as a PDF of an article in the New England Journal of Medicine about placebo and “nocebo” effects.
“A Scientist in Wonderland” by Harriet Hall published on Science-Based Medicine
“I Used to be a Holistic Nutritionist” by Denby Royal published on Science-Based Medicine
“Placebo and Nocebo Effects” by Luana Colloca, M.D., Ph.D., and Arthur J. Barsky, M.D., published in The New England Journal of Medicine
Members are welcome to propose and schedule a topic which would be of interest toward establishing a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. Please contact us if you have a topic that you would like to discuss at an upcoming Café Inquiry.
