Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day’s topic followed by open discussion. At 12:00pm we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.

Our sun is one of billions of similar stars in the Milky Way galaxy. As we are seeing, a good percentage of these stars have Earth-like planets. If Earth is typical, some may have developed intelligent life and some of the resulting civilizations may have developed interstellar travel. As some of these planets are billions of years older than Earth, these civilizations would have had plenty of time to completely traverse the galaxy, even at the relatively slow travel pace that seems at least plausible with today’s science. So if there are a large number of these civilizations out there, why have we found no evidence of their existence? Today we’ll discuss the Fermi Paradox – the contradiction between the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial civilizations and the various estimates for the high probability that such civilizations exist. Despite the apparent probability of other civilizations, and despite the fact that our galaxy is one of an estimated 2 trillion in the observable universe, we have to at least entertain the possibility that we are the lone civilization in existence. Here is a link to a short article that will provide background for the discussion:
