This week’s topics is: Vaccines.
In response to the current pandemic, the race is on to develop a vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causative agent for the Covid-19 illness. For this week’s discussion we’ll have a brief introduction.  Topics we hope to discuss include the history of vaccine development, how they work and their impact on public health. We also plan to look at some disease statistics pre- and post-vaccine development, and why some viruses can be permanently eradicated while others will be with us forever. We can also talk about challenges in developing vaccines and how antivaccine sentiments threaten to mitigate the effectiveness of vaccines that have been in use for years. Below are links to a few articles related to the topics under discussion:
Vaccine HIstory: Vaccine Developments by Year from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
The Psychology of Vaccine Denial by Steven Novella from Science-Based Medicine

Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day’s topic followed by open discussion. At 12:00pm we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.

Members are welcome to propose and schedule a topic which would be of interest toward establishing a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. Please contact us if you have a topic that you would like to discuss at an upcoming Café Inquiry.

Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
