Café Inquiry – The Declining Membership in Service Organizations (Grand Rapids)Date:
August 11, 2019
Schuler Books & Music
2660 28th St SE
Grand Rapids, MI 49512 United States
Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day’s topic followed by open discussion. At 12:00pm we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.
This week’s topic will be: The Declining Membership in Service Organizations. At one time service and civic organizations such as the Lions, Kiwanis, and JayCees served an important role in American culture. Now those organizations, along with religious ones, are facing declining memberships. There are various articles in local publications discussing this but they all seem to refer back to the 1996 article, “The Strange Disappearance of Civic America” by Robert Putnam in The America Prospect.
Members are welcome to propose and schedule a topic which would be of interest toward establishing a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. Please contact us if you have a topic that you would like to discuss at an upcoming Café Inquiry.
Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
To find the group go to studio located in the back right corner of the bookstore (not the café).
Food & Beverages are available for purchase.
