Description:

Café Inquiry is a casual event starting with a short 10-15 minute introduction of the day’s topic followed by open discussion. At 12:00pm we will break for coffee/brunch and a chance to socialize.

This week’s topic will be Deplatforming Speakers. Is deplatforming ever a justified action? Is it in conflict with freedom of speech? Nathan Zwierzynski will present this often divisive but always timely topic. Attendees are encouraged to read these articles on the subject prior to the event:

Katie Herzog’s article on the Stranger: There Is a Much Smarter Way to Deal With Controversial Speakers Than Deplatforming.

Zach Beauchamp’s article on Vox: Milo Yiannopoulos’s collapse shows that no-platforming can work.

Jason Koebler’s article on Vice: Deplatforming Works.

Members are welcome to propose and schedule a topic which would be of interest toward establishing a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. Please contact us if you have a topic that you would like to discuss at an upcoming Café Inquiry.

Café Inquiry (Grand Rapids) meets on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.

To find the group go to studio located in the back right corner of the bookstore (not the café).

Food & Beverages are available for purchase.
