We welcome Danita Brandt to speak on a much overlooked aspect of Charles Darwin’s contributions to science as a geologist.

Charles Darwin considered himself a geologist before he got distracted by the species thing. Meet the Darwin you didn’t know in this presentation highlighting Darwin’s geological contributions and the role his geological training played in the development of his ideas on the origin and evolution of life.

About Danita Brandt, PhD

Associate Professor, Michigan State University

Danita Brandt is Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Geological Sciences at Michigan State University. She is a paleontologist whose research interests center on the evolution, extinction, paleobiology, and paleoecology of fossil arthropods. She is also engaged in informalscience education efforts, including "Darwin Discovery Day", MSU's annual community-wide celebration of science and discovery in honor of Charles Darwin's birthday. Recently Dr. Brandt has channeled her efforts toward using social media as tools in promoting increased public understanding of issues related to evolution and the history of the Earth. She currently serves as a member of the Paleontological Society's Education & Outreach Committee, is a past Councilor for Paleontology for SEPM--the Society for Sedimentary Geology, and is an alumnus of the University of Illinois (B.S.), University of Cincinnati (M.S.) and Yale University (Ph.D.).
